Document Summary

What is biological determinism? chapter 2: biological determinism and scientific explanations of: actions and behaviors are determined by genetics, specific to species. In our society, what human qualities or behaviors are commonly represented as biologically determined: metabolism: someone thinks their weight loss is determined by fast metabolism and out of their control. Family medical history, mental illness/ health, sex drive/ procreation o: masculinity vs feminine qualities, humans as innately competitive, behaviours: People having biological factor in becoming an addict. Humans are born with blank slates capable of any behavior under the right conditions. o. Like other animals, humans are biological entities, and our behavior must therefore be, to some extent, limited by both our genetic matter and physical capabilities. Humans are limited ex: cannot stay under water for long periods if time, cannot become. This perspective understands humans too mechanistically/ too universally. If behavior was determined by biology (instinct) we would not be able to behave otherwise.
