Chapter 1: concepts of crime, law and criminology. Criminology is an academic discipline that uses the scientific method to study the nature, extent, cause, and control of criminal behaviour. ^this is unlike policitcal figures and media whose opinions on crime may be colored by personal experience, bias, and election concerns; criminologists remain objective as they study crime. Criminology includes within its scope the processes of making laws, breaking laws, aws, breaking laws, and reactions toward breaking laws. -> the objective of criminology is the development of a body of general and verified principles regarding the process of law crime and treatment. Criminal justice refers to the study of the agencies of social control such as the police, courts and corrections. Criminology is also related to the study of deviant behaviours.
