Document Summary
Media and images of inequality readings, week one. Chapter one: cultural studies, multiculturalism, and media culture by douglas kellner. In the 1980s cultural studies emerged as a set of approaches to the study of culture, society and politics. For cultural studies the concept of ideology is of central importance; ideologies of class (idolizing rich), race (use of racist representations), gender (sexist representations), which make subordination seem natural leading to consent. Culture studies tries to be multicultural in accepting the experiences of all marginalized groups, affirms the worth of different cultures. Specifies how people can resist the dominant ideologies and produce their own critical readings. Important to analyze cultural texts within their system of production and distribution (political economy of culture) Study of the codes of media is enhanced by studying the formulas and conventions of production which are shaped by economic considerations (explains why there are limits on song and video lengths, why file sharing is illegal, etc)
