Document Summary
Major theoretical perspectives of crime & deviance based on explanations: Several criminological theories do not fall under above: Without theoretical foundation, we could find ourselves advancing ungrounded, fragmented opinions rather than disciplined, scientific approach to exploring & explaining crime & deviance. Conceptions of science vary across theoretical perspectives. Most well-travelled criminological theories are quite complex. Even when attempting to explain only one type of crime. To be good, theory must be logical w/ valid structure. Must follow most basic rules of critical thinking & logic. Must also help us make sense of reality. Good theory should make statements/propositions about reality that can be tested. So that theory can be accepted/rejected on basis of solid evidence. Social disorganization theory, social control theory, social learning theory have been successfully tested multiple diff times, in diff countries, at diff points of time. Social context - very influential when it comes to formulation of theory. All theories are affected to some extent by circumstances.
