CRIM 300W Chapter 12: CRIM 300 Chapter 12
Document Summary
Integrated theories - those in which 2 or more traditional theories merged into one cohesive model. Some integrated theories go well beyond formulating r/s b/w 2 or more. Emphasis on theoretical integration is relatively recent development that has evolved due to need to improve empirical validity of traditional theories which suffer from lack of input from various disciplines. Systematic reductionism - refers to pervasive attempts to explain criminal behaviour in terms of particular system of knowledge. Sutherland & sociologists intent on turning study of crime into exclusively sociological enterprise & overreacted to efforts of potential intruders to capture some of what they regarded as their intellectual turf. Many modern criminologists now acknowledge limitations of state of systemic reductionism, which limits theories to only one system of knowledge. Resulting in period of relative stagnation in theoretical development. Proposed that integrated theories evolved as response to limitations & need to revitalize progress in area of criminological theory building.
