The better you know someone, the more casual and relaxed your speech style is. More vernacular forms when they are a close friend. This generalization is the same across all languages. Audience design: a person will cater their speaking style depending on the social background of the audience. People adapt the way they speak to sounds more like the people that they are speaking to. A person"s speech converges towards the speech of the person they are talking to. Considered to be a polite speech strategy. Develop on the topic that another person started. Deliberately choosing a language not used by one"s addressee. People who aspire to be in a higher social class will deliberately make their speech more formal. Can indicate a speaker"s negative attitudes towards the addressees.
