Ch 11 - developmental psychology = the study of continuity and change across the life span. If newborn brains were 60% adult size, would not be able to pass thru birth canal: underdeveloped also allows brain to adapt/develop to enviro requirements. Insufficient nutrition -> physical problems, psychological problems: higher risk of schizo, antisocial personality disorder, ca(cid:374) also affe(cid:272)t (cid:271)a(cid:271)(cid:455)(cid:859)s food p(cid:396)efe(cid:396)e(cid:374)(cid:272)es. In addition to the food a pregnant woman eats, teratogens, or agents that impair fetal development, can affect the fetus. Some of the most common teratogens are tobacco and alcohol: although the fetus cannot see much in the womb, it can hear sounds and become familiar with those it hea(cid:396)s ofte(cid:374), su(cid:272)h as its (cid:373)othe(cid:396)(cid:859)s (cid:448)oi(cid:272)e. Joint attention = ability to focus on what another person is focused on. Is a prereq for learning what others have to teach.
