Document Summary

Genetic epistemology: the origin and development of knowledge. Empiricism: knowledge arrives though our senses and the mind passively registers information: information arrives in through our senses but what we know about the world is our own subjective view, piaget"s alternative to empiricism was constructivism. Constructivism: knowledge develops through the child coordinating her interactions with the world: piaget believed that all knowledge was rooted in action, children understand the world in terms of what they can do with it. Self-organizing system: people are constantly changing themselves and the environment around them. In order to achieve equilibrium again, they must accommodate their scheme in order to fit the new information. Development is a continuum and it is progressive. Children learn from their mistakes and develop new ways of doing things. Use assimilation and accommodation in order to achieve equilibrium. Why do stages matter so much: stages are not based on age, but the order of the stages remains the same.
