Levels of self-awareness: experiment: placing a mark on the child"s forehead and then playing with them until they forget about it. Then placing them in front of a mirror to see what they do. Level 0: confusion: no self-awareness, see the mirror as an extension of the world. Level 1: differentiation: begin to see the mirror as a unique experience. Level 2: situation: explore how the movements of the reflection compare to their own movements, no more confusion at this level. Level 3: identification: realizes that the reflection in the mirror is them. Level 4: permanence: the self can be identified beyond interaction with the mirror (pictures, videos etc) Level 5: self-consciousness or meta self-awareness : become aware of how they are perceived in the eyes of others, are able to take on a third person perspective. A natural history of self-awareness informed by infancy research.
