Document Summary

1. 1 genetics is important to us individually, to society, and to the study of biology. Plays a role in agriculture, pharmaceutics, medicine (gene therapy direct alteration of genes to treat human disease) All organisms use genetic systems that have a number of features in common. Evolution is genetic change that takes place over time. So the study of evolution requires an understanding of genetics. Organisms are suited to the environment in which they are found. Genome complete set of genetic instructions for any organism. All genomes are encoded in nucleic acids either dna or rna. All genetic instructions are in the same format. Processes by which genetic info is copied and decoded are similar for all forms of life. This all suggests that all life on earth evolved from the same primordial ancestor that arose bw 3. 5-5 billion years ago. Also means that genes will function in foreign cells- making genetic engineering possible.
