Displaying emoions: the development (and control) or emoional expressions. Basic emoions: the set of emoions, present at birth or emerging early in the irst year of life, that some theorists believe to be biologically programed. At birth babies display interest, distress, disgust, and contentment. Anger, sadness, surprise, and fear normally appear by the middle of the irst year. Complex emoions: self-conscious of self-evaluaive emoions that emerge in the second year and depend, in part, on cogniive development. Parents model posiive emoions, atend carefully to their infants" pleasant feelings, and are less responsive to infants" negaive displays are socializing their emoions. Emoional self-regulaion: strategies for managing emoions or adjusing emoional arousal to an appropriate level of intensity: usually begins by the end of the irst year, develops slowly. Toddlers gradually more from being dependent on others to regulate their emoions to being able to regulate emoions on their own.
