The scientific study of the way in which peoples thoughts, feelings and beh. s are influenced by the real or imagined presence of other ppl. Anthropology & sociology are also interested in how ppl are influenced by their social environment. But social psych is distinct b. c its concerned more with how ppl are influenced by their interpretation, or construal, of their social environment. They believe its more importatnt to understand how they interpret than it is to understand the properties of the social world itself. Construal (the way in which ppl comprehend and interpret the social world) Folk wisdom (journalist, critics, novelists) vs. social psychology. There speculations, bc they underestimate the power of the situation, are almost always wrong, or at least oversimplified. Problem with source: often they disagree with each other, no way of knowing which is correct. Philosophers get insight into the nature of consciousness. & how ppl form beliefs about the social world.
