Conducted to understand psychological processes without regard for whether or not the knowledge is immediately applicable - increases our knowledge. To understand a psychological phenomenon rather than to solve a particular problem. Find solutions for certain problems rather than to enhance general knowledge about psychological processes. Some applied researchers use scientific approaches to understand and solve some problem of immediate concern (employee morale, prejudice, etc). Other applied researchers conduct evaluation research (or program evaluation) using behavioural research methods to assess the effects of social or institutional programs on behaviour. Tests must be administered, analyzed, and refined to meet certain statistical criteria. Then collected & analyzed to identify the best predictors of the target behaviour. Impt part of science involves developing and testing theories that explain the phenomena of interest.
