Sonata allegro form: provided a structure shared by composers and audiences. Provided a logical structure that permitted the music to be meaningful. Dictates expected order in which themes and musical keys are explored. The idea that the musical form is essential to communicating musical meaning is a parallel to classical music and classical cognitive science: 1. Both domains presume that their formal structures are content bearing: classical explains cognition by invoking the intentional stance. Use the intentional states of an agent (beliefs, desires, goals) and that people are rational to predict future behavior. Composers argue that music can express ideas/ have intended meanings. How do they convey these meanings: through exploiting particular musical forms (ex. Ccs: explains cognition by sense think act cycles. Cm: does a composer first think of the melody/theme then translate the mental representation into musical score: abstract thinking is prerequisite for composition. Role of the score as a source of control displays another aspect of disembodiment.
