PSYCO367 Chapter Notes - Chapter 3: Neural Correlates Of Consciousness, Prosopagnosia, Lightdark
Document Summary
Neural processing: interaction of signals in many neurons. The interconnected pathway of neural signally: involves incorporating signals from many different neurons, increases the richness of the information. Ex. how lateral inhibition increases our perception of contours beyond the stimulus itself. Vertical signal transmission is affected by horizontal (ex. lateral) communication in the neural network of the retina. Lateral inhibition: inhibition transmitted across the retina (horizontal: excitation of a neuron leads to decreased excitation of a neighbouring neuron. Allows us to understand several visual illusions: the hermann grid: seeing spots at an intersection, mach bands: seeing borders more sharply, simultaneous contrast: seeing areas of different brightness due to adjacent areas. Hartline, wagner, and ratliff (1956: used limulus (horseshoe crab) as an animal model in a classic study of lateral inhibition in the eye. Ommatidia are tiny structures that make up the limulus eye: each has a small lens over 1 receptor.
