Data is a collection of material that provides information about something. People who respond to a survey are known as respondents. People who are surveyed are known as subjects. Animals, plants, websites, etc are known as experimental units or observational units. In a data table, rows correspond to cases and are known as records. Categorical variables are also known as qualitative variables, and they only name categories. A variable solely used to identify a unique identity is known as identifier variable. Variables that report order without units are knows as ordinal variables. A univariate set only has one variable. Quantitative variables answer questions about the quantity in measurement. Qualitative variables answer questions on how the cases fall into the categories. A parameter is a numerical summary of the population. A statistic is a numerical summary of the sample of a population. Discrete data is a counted integeral data that is plotted with points.
