Marx argues each significant period in history is constructed around a particular mode of production": the way society is organized to produce material necessities of life (food, shelter, etc. ) Each mode of production produces: specific ways of obtaining the necessities of life, specific social relationships b/w workers & those who control the mode of production, specific social institutions (incl. cultural ones) Claim that how society produces it means of existence ultimately determines the political, social, & cultural shape of that society & its possible future development.
