Document Summary

The unemployment rate is the percentage of the labour force that is unemployed. Every month, statistics canada conducts the labour force survey (lfs) to collect the data needed to compute the unemployment rate. It focuses only on the working age population; people 15 years of age or older who are legally entitled to work in canada. Participants in the survey are put into three categories: employed- anyone who did paid work, unpaid work for a family business, or worked for themselves. Includes people who have been temporarily laid off, or will be starting a new job within four weeks: not in the labour force- people unable or unwilling to do paid work. Includes those who want a job but have given up looking. The labour force is all the people who are working or actively looking for work- the sum of employed and unemployed workers in the economy.
