ANSC 2340 Chapter Notes - Chapter 6: Endomysium, Cardiac Muscle, Cellular Respiration
Document Summary
Muscle is one of the four basic tissues of the body. Muscle has muscle cells with 4 characteristics (excitability, contractibility, extensibility, elasticity) 3 primary functions: provide motion, maintain posture, generate heat. 3 different kinds of muscle: skeletal, cardiac and smooth. Skeletal muscle controlled by conscious mind, moves bones of skeleton so animal can move around. Cardiac muscle is found only in 1 place in body, the heart (makes up most of the heart) Smooth muscle is found all over body in places like eyes, air passageways in lungs, stomach, intestine. Carries out most of the unconscious, internal movements that the body needs to maintain itself in good working order (nervous system gives order and muscle carries it out) Cardiac and smooth don"t require stimulation from nerves to carry out basic functions (its built in) Nervous system can modify/adjust these functions but not start them. Moves bones of skeleton which moves the animal around.
