Kinship: the people we are related to through blood (consanguineal) and marriage (af nal) Fictive kinship: friends not biologically related but considered part of a kin group. Descent group: any publicly recognized social entity requiring lineal descent from a particular real or mythical ancestor for membership. Unilineal descent: descent that establishes group membership exclusively through either the mother"s or the fathers line. Matrilineal descent: descent traced exclusively through ones mothers grandmothers line, etc. to establish group membership. Patrilineal descent: descent traced exclusively through one"s father grandfathers line etc. , to establish group membership. Double descent: a system tracing descent matrilineally for some purposes and matrilineally for others. Ambilineal descent: descent in which the individual may af liate with either the mothers or the fathers descent group. Lineage: a corporate descent group whose members true their genealogical links to a common ancestor. Fission: the splitting of a descent group in two or more new decent groups.
