Communicative chauvinism: belief that everyone else thinks and acts as we do: communication depends on sensitivity to differences and a real desire to establish common ground, co-operation and coordination are essential. Communication as collective activity: relationship between human society and human communication is circular. Joost meerloo: communication comes from munica meaning service and mutual help, exchange and interaction in those in a community. Communication as a creative endeavour: result of human communication is human creativity. Communication as regulatory: communication is regulatory because we can act on our world, regulator of action. Communicative competence: ability to communicate in a personally effective and socially appropriate manner. Involves 2 separate levels: surface level, performative competence: part of competence that can be seen, performance of day to day behaviours, deeper level, process competence: everything we have to know in order to perform. Implicit knowledge: knowledge we don"t have to think about, unconscious and guides behaviour.
