HIST 2040 Chapter Notes - Chapter 3: Decimal Mark, Ope
Document Summary
The art of troop deployment is the great art of war. It would be a great misfortune to leave this line if one were later forced to fall back on it. In war, [of what matters] is morale; the relative strength of troops only matters . One must not make a mistake with regard to this, where one decimal point more or less can change everything. Therefore, accident always remains a mystery for mediocre minds while it becomes a reality for superior people: the art of war does not demand complicated maneuvers: the simplest are preferable; what is needed above all is common sense. Consequently, one does not understand how generals make mistakes: it is because they want to be clever. The most difficult thing is to divine the plans of the enemy, and to see what is reality in all the reports one receives.
