39 views1 pages

Document Summary

The 2 main themes i took away from chapters 1 and 2 also ties into the class discussion we had during the second lecture. These themes are the definition of childhood, and secondly, the act of children taking on adult responsibilities at a very young age. Touching on the first theme of children vs. childhood, it was said that characteristics such as innocence, school, friends, games, nature and sweets were what made a child have a childhood. If the child (aged 0-14), did not have these experiences, they did not have a childhood. Secondly, as mentioned in class, children took on many adult burdens during their childhood. In the textbook, cunningham talks about the classical inheritance period where there was a high percent of infanticide and child slavery. This can be tied back to class lecture as the very act of surviving is meant for the responsibility of the adult parent of the child.
