Leadership is a process whereby an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal. Defining it as a process means not a trait or characteristic, but a transactional event that occurs between leader and followers. Process implies leader affects and is not affected by followes. When leadership is defined as an even it becomes available to everyone. Leadership involves influence concerned with how the leader affects followers. Groups are the context in which leadership takes place. Leaders and followers have a mutual purpose although the leaders and followers are closely linked, it is the leader who often initiates the relationship, creates the communication linkages, and carries the burned for maintaining the relationship. Assigned versus emergent leadership leadership based on occupying a position- assigned leadership. When others perceive an individual as the most influential member of a group or an organization, regardless of title- emergent leadership.
