The primary function of the eye is to gather light and change it into an action potential. For the purposes of human perception, light actually refers to radiation that occupies a relatively narrow band of the electromagnetic system. The eye consists of specialized structures that regulate the amount of light that enters the eye and organizes it into a pattern that the brain can interpret. Sclera: white, outer surface of the eye. Cornea: clear layer that covers the front portion of the eye and also contributes to the eye"s ability to focus. Light enters the eye through the cornea and passes through an opening called the pupil. Pupil: regulates the amount of light that enters by changing its size; it dilates (expands) to allow more light to enter and constricts (shrinks) to allow less light into the eye. The changes in the pupil"s size are performed by the iris:
