The way in which people perceive, think about, feel about, and act toward people in other groups. Tendency to not follw normal rules of behaviour as a result of losing one"s self awareness: can happen to the diffusion of responsibility. Anonymity: social precursor to deindividuation, increased when wearing uniform, shown to increase aggression. Accountability: whether a person expects to be held responsible for their actions, as size of group increases, so does the level of violence. Decrease in self-awareness: leads people to focus less on matching their behaviours to their normal standards, placing a mirror in front of someone increase self-awareness and honesty. In larger gathering (with 2 groups/riots) each group responds to how they think the other group is reacting to them. Social identity theory: each person strives to enhance his or her self-esteem which is composed of: personal identity and social identity: leads them to favour their in-group.
