Document Summary

The book does not define self-control independent form the tendency to commit crimes and bad behaviors. Gottfredson and hirschi = a general theory of crime. Behaviors that are the result of low self-control = crime because they are self-centered, impulsive and lacking in perseverance. Self-control is internalized early in life and determines who is likely to commit crime. Parenting determines how much self-control their children learn. Crime opportunity= just as strong of a crime predictor as low self-control. Some researchers don"t believe low self-control explains. The theory was not great fir predicting violent crimes like for the varying criminal behavior homicide. A longitudinal study shows that having stable employment and marriage can redirect offenders to a life of conformity even though they are not children any more. White collar crimes are not explained by that theory either (they have the self-control required to get an education that allows them to get cooperate jobs)
