Stools are frequent and liquid (same for colostomy of ascending colon) Has as coninent stoma that is drained using a catheter. Descending colostomy & sigmoid colostomy have near normal stools. In medical emergency when closure of the colostomy is expected. 2 openings in stoma proximal drains stool, distal drains mucus. A stoma formed from one end of the bowel with the distal porion either removed or sewn closed and let there. For colorectal cancer, rectum may also be removed. Divericuliis: may have temporary end colostomy with hartman"s pouch. Bowel is severed and 2 ends brought to abdomen. Some paients may irrigate let sided colostomy to regulate emptying. Paient then removes cone ip and then wait 30-45 mins for feces to drain into toilet through irrigaion sleeve. Enterostomal therapist is a nurse trained in wound care and ostomies. Pouch and a skin barrier (wafer, paste, powder, liquid ilm applied to skin around stoma)
