Unconscious mind : vast and powerful but inaccessible part of consciousness, operating without conscious endorsement or will to influence and guide behaviours. Developed in the 1890s by sigmund freud. The structural theory (integral parts of the human mind) Id: unconscious and contains the basic instinctual drives. Ego: conscious; the rational, organized and realistic part. Superego: mostly unconscious and is where the ideals and values that a person learns from their parents or role models are stored. Defence mechanisms : unconscious strategies the ego uses to reduce or avoid anxiety. Unresolved smoking or nail biting in adulthood. Anal (18-36 months) learning to control one"s anus during toilet training. X = concern with either obsessive cleanliness or extreme messiness. X= over or under indulgence of sexual behaviour and issues regarding sexual identity. Genital (puberty to adulthood) has direct sexual urges toward people of opposite sex conflict-free.
