Document Summary

Motivation need/desire that energizes and directs behaviour. Drive-reduction theory a physiological need creates an aroused tension state (a drive) that motivates an organism to satisfy the need an increase in a physiological need is accompanied by an increase in a psychological drive. Drive reduction is based on idea of homeostasis in addition to being pushed to reduce our drives, we are also pulled by incentives incentive positive or negative environmental stimulus that motivates behaviour by luring or repelling. When there is both a need and an incentive, we feel strong driven: e. g. food-deprived person who smells baking bread feels a strong hunger drive. Drive being food-deprived; incentive baking bread. 2 things involved drive (physiological/biological) and incentive (environmental) Optimum arousal some motivated behaviour actually increase arousal: 9-month-old investigate every accessible corner of house, sensation seekers . Human motivation aims not to eliminate arousal but to seek optimum levels of arousal.
