Stress and illness stress: a psychological and physiological reaction that occurs when perceived demands exceed existing resources to meet those demands. Stress refers to both events (stressors) and experiences in response to these events (stress response) People"s responses to stress differ and stress can be caused by numerous forces. Primary appraisal: individual perceives a potential threat and asks if it"s a threat. Secondary appraisal: process of determining how to cope with a perceived threat (can lead to a reduction in the amount of stress or a continuation of it) Stress depends on our mental appraisal of a situation or event.
