Document Summary

Two types of aggression: hostile aggression: aimed to inflict pain, instrumental aggression: aggression as a means to some goal other than causing pain. Society performs an essential function in regulating this instinct and in helping people to sublimate it that is to turn the destructive energy into acceptable or useful behaviour. Jean-jacques rousseau argues: humans are noble savages , naturally gentle creatures born into a restrictive society that forces them to become hostile and aggressive. The evolutionary argument: recent years, there are discussions arguing that aggression is genetically programmed into men because it enables them to perpetuate their genes, men are theorized to aggress for 2 reasons: 1. Males behave aggressively to establish dominance over other males (females choose what"s best for the genes and protection and resources for offspring). Makes aggress jealously to ensure that their mates are not copulated with others (ensures their paternity)
