A system of law can be defined as a set of historically rooted beliefs and practices with respect to how the law is formed, its nature and role in society, and organization of the legal system. In such traditions, the sources of law can be broadly broken down into three groups: the revelations from god, commentary on these revelations, and opinions of scholars. The revelations are usually written in the form of verses, songs, prayers, and sayings that are not immediately recognizable as law. They often do not explicitly provide all answers to all situations and so other sources such as commentary and opinions of learned scholars become important: talmudic legal tradition.
