Document Summary

Chapter 8 - saving, investment, and financial system. Financial system - the group of institutions in the economy that help match one person"s saving with another person"s investment. The financial system moves the economy"s scarce resources from savers to borrowers: savers. They save to put a child through university. Or save up for retirement: borrowers. They buy a house to live in or start a business to make a living. People save with expectation to get the money back with interest. Borrows take money knowing they will have to pay back with interest. Financial markets - financial institutions through which savers can directly provide funds to borrows. The bond market: bond - a certificate of indebtedness. It identifies when the bond will be paid: each bond has a different length of time. Some are a couple of days while others can last 30 years: long term bonds vs short term bonds.
