Common routes: oral ingestion: most common, relatively slow absorption must pass through stomach, then small intestine before bloodstream (alcohol is an exception since most of it is absorbed without digestion). Many oral ingestions are coated to keep stomach acid from dissolving them before they reach the intestine, this protects stomach lining from irritation. Method usually results in rapid absorption; rapidity depends on what type of injection: Intravenous: injection directly into a vein, effect will be felt within 3 minutes; extremely effective, used for medical emergencies.
