Chapter 3 the health care professional-paient relaionship. Starson, psychiatric hospital detainee, injected w anipsychoic drug against will. His interest in physics led him to refuse treatment for his mental illness: believed meds would make his thinking sluggish. Catch 22: with treatment, he could recover and be released from the psychiatric insituion, at the cost of his creaivity; without he could maintain his creaivity but remain insituionalized. Doctors diagnose illness/determine appropriate treatment, while nurses are responsible for the ongoing care of paients (feeding/washing) Docs should acknowledge that their paients are oten vulnerable. How doctors envision their role will be afected both by the way in which they understand the physician-paient relaionship and by what they believe the goals of medicine to be. Opimize chances for healthy life: death prevenion: do whatever we can to keep people alive (use all tech even with no hope of recovery) Obscures that paient is in vulnerable posiion: consumers buy products.
