Chapter 4 -measuring people: variables, samples & the qualitative critique. This feature varies as you grow older and varies between individuals. Can be measured in seconds, minutes, hours, etc. The political party people vote for represented by numbers. Note that differences between parties are qualitative and cannot be. Measures using a psychological scale that would give us a score for extroversion. Variable in which cases are merely placed into independent, separate categories. Variable in which cases measured on it are place on some sort of directional scale. Tendency to treat abstract concepts as real entities. Phenomenon assumed to exist & used to explain observed but as yet unconfirmed effects; remains an explanation of effects while evidence supports it. Type of test that attempts to quantify psychological constructs such as skills, ability, character. Extent to which instruments measure what they were intended to; extent to which a research effect can be trusted as a real or as not contaminated or confounded.
