Substance dependence: debate on whether this refers to purely physiological dependence or psychological dependence, but ultimately this term is used as addiction. Physiological addiction/dependence: develops a tolerance where one requires more of the drug to experience the same effect and will respond in a negative way (withdrawal) Alcohol withdrawal delirium (delirium tremens): person can experience hallucinations and body tremors. Other withdrawal (from any substance) could include nausea, diarrhea, fever, chills, vomiting, aches, body tremors. Psychological dependence: drug seeking behaviours themselves as a measure of dependence. The repeated use of a drug, a desperate need to ingest more of the substance, and the likelihood that use will resume after a period of absence. *substance abuse disorders are now explained in the dsm5 on a spectrum described by levels of severity.
