Document Summary

Battery group of galvanic cells connected in series, where the potentials add up = total battery potential. Lead coated with lead dioxide serves as the cathode. Major factor in making the automobile a practical means of transport. Electrodes are dipped into an electrolyte solution of sulfuric acid. Typical automobile battery has 6 cells connected in series. Each cell contains multiple electrodes in the form of grids and produces about 2 volts each = total of 12. Condition of battery can be checked by measuring the density of the hso4. The solid lead sulfate adheres to the grid surface of the electrodes. Battery is recharged by forcing current in opposite direction reverse the reaction. Cars battery is continuously charged by an alternator driven by the engine. Dead battery can be jump-started by connecting its battery to the battery in a running automobile. But it is dangerous, since the resulting flow of current causes electrolysis producing o2 and h2 gases.
