Chapter 1 how to read and critique research. Instrumental value numbers may have practical applications such as allowing social services to plan to accommodate a particular number of clients. Institutions construct numbers to further their own agendas. Institutions use numbers to legitimize their interests and actions: numbers are often posed as absolute fact, used as evidence to support particular arguments, numbers are seen as a superior representation compared to other symbolic codes. Numerical literacy the ability to understand numerical data to critique research. Quantitative research (cid:374)u(cid:373)(cid:271)ers as data, prese(cid:374)ted as the (cid:862)o(cid:271)je(cid:272)tive truth(cid:863) Qualitative research data that falls into categories: example: blood type (a, b, ab, o), your hair colour, your ethnicity. Quantitative research and qualitative research are interdependent forces: numbers must be paired with contextual factors to see the whole picture. Social science approach tends to assume that researchers engage in a deductive process; however, research is much more complex.
