CCT324H5 Chapter Notes - Chapter 2: Job Performance, Extraversion And Introversion, Fundamental Attribution Error
Document Summary
Attribution theory when we observe atypical behavior by an individual, we try to determine if it is internally or externally caused. Is the individual responsible for the behavior? (internally caused: student partied late into the night, is late to class. Halo effect: halo effect drawing a general impression of an individual based on a single characteristic, intelligence, likeability, or appearance, our general views contaminate our specific ones. Projection: projection attributing one"s own characteristics to other people, people who engage in projection tend to perceive others according to what they themselves are like, rather than perceiving others as they really are. Stereotyping: stereotyping judging someone based on our perception of the group to which they belong, heuristics judgment shortcuts in decision making. Interviewers make perceptual judgments that are often inaccurate: we form impressions of others within a tenth of a second, based on our first glance.
