Document Summary

Self-control emerges in infancy and gradually improves during the preschool years: At approximately the first birthday, infants become aware that people impose demands on them, and they must react accordingly; they are not entirely free to behave as they wish; instead, others set limits on what they can do. These limits reflect both concern for their safety as well as early socialization efforts. At about two years of age, toddlers have internalized some of the controls imposed by others and are capable of some self-(cid:272)o(cid:374)t(cid:396)ol i(cid:374) thei(cid:396) pa(cid:396)e(cid:374)ts" a(cid:271)se(cid:374)(cid:272)e. At about three years of age, children become capable of self-regulation; they can devise ways to control their own behaviour. Although preschoolers are able to regulate impulsive behaviour somewhat, they still have much to learn and control is achieved only gradually throughout the elementary-school years. Research consistently links greater self-control with a disciplinary style in which parents are warm and loving but establish well-defined limits on what behaviour is.
