These massive changes in cultural and social structures are concentrated in the late 19th and early 20th century. English colonist: culture became influential in american life. Northeastern native americans: their customs were considered savage from colonist. African-american slaves: suffered a total breakdown in family life. Colonial contrasts: the varieties of caregiving patterns in a single historical era. In the past, caring was a less important bond of family life and community than hard work, discipline and duty. They thought of families as little communities based in work, religion and obedience to authority. Colonial men and women shared both economic production and child rearing. Good parental care was to enforce self-control and obedience to parents, god and the town fathers. This a lot different from what it is today.
