Document Summary
Species are real biological entities, if we graph characteristics we see clusters are distinct: reflection of ability to exchange genetic material and produce fertile offspring, and pass down adaptations, mutations spread within species but not beyond them. Species groups of potentially interbreeding populations that are reproductively isolated from other groups: offspring must be fertile in order to pass on genes to own offspring. Difficult/time consuming to make two species mate, then make offspring mate. Does not apply to asexual species since it relies on interbreeding. Members of the same species usually look alike. Usually have similar dna sequences that are distinct from other species. Members of same species may look different due to polymorphisms different ohenotypes in same species. Species are characterized by ecological niche (habitat requirements) Impossible for two species to coexist in same location if niches are too similar competition for resources will make one extinct. Members of a species all share common ancestor and fate.
