Cancer is the leading cause of death in western countries. 500 000 people die from this disease. Cancer is a genetic disease at the somatic level the combined effects of numerous abnormal gene products lead to the uncontrolled growth and spread of cancer cells. Some mutated cancers are inherited but most are created within the somatic cells that then divide the form of tumors. The completion of the human genome project tells us a new understanding of cancer genetics and also leading to a new gene specific treatments. Gene targeted therapies will replace chemo within the next 25 years. Cancer is a genetic disease at the level of somatic cells. Cancer is caused by mutations that arise in the somatic cells. 5% of cancers are associated with germ like mutations that increase a persons susceptibility to certain types of cancer.
