Chapter 1: humans in the world of biology. Living things contain nucleic acids, proteins, carbohydrates and lipids. Living things are composed of cells: cells are the smallest units of life, all cells come from preexisting cells, cells divide to form new cells making it possible for reproduction, growth and repair. Living things use energy and raw materials: metabolism: refers to all chemical reactions that occur within the cells of living things. Living things maintain homeostasis: homeostasis: relatively constant & self-correcting internal environment of a living organism. Domain archaea: unicellular prokaryotic, live in extreme conditions. Science: a systematic approach to answering questions. Inductive reasoning: facts are accumulated through observation until the sheer weight of the evidence allows some logical general statement to be made. Deductive reasoning: begins with a general statement that leads to one or more conclusions. Most common animal used to test is rodents bc they are intensive to use, have short life spans and reproduce quickly.
