Feudal system and dominance of the church. Feudal system: social position and responsibility were inherited by birth. Humanism, a broad philosophy that celebrated human achievement and capacity and encouraged an empirical un- derstanding of the world. Empirical- a perspective that people might come to understand the world through individual observation and ex- perience rather than religious texts and emissaries of the church. Martin luther argued that each individual could come to know god directly-and attempted to redefine religion and morality on a more individual basis indulgences- remissions, granted by the pope, from temporal punishment for sins confessed and forgiven. Printing undermined the power of the catholic church and its priests to act as an intermediaries in delivering reli- gion to the people and led to the reformation of the church.
