PSYA01H3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 7: Classical Conditioning, Mnemonic, Flashbulb Memory
Document Summary
Memory is a collection of several systems that store information in different forms for differing amounts of time. Stones retain information in memory without using it for any specific purpose. The arrows show control processes, which shift info from one memory store to another. Information enters the sensory memory through vision, hearing, etc. , and attention (a type of control process) selections which information will pass on to the stm. Sensory memory hold perceptual info for a very short time: how short depends on how we acquired this information: (i. e the type of sensory memory it is) Iconic memory (visual) - 1 second. Hold images long enough to provide smooth, continuous perceptions. Sensory memory holds info long enough for us to determine what we need to pay attention to. Holds information for less than a minute. However, some of the information here goes through encoding, which is the process of storing information in the ltm system.
