PSYA01H3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 4.4: Olfactory Bulb, Olfactory Tract, Monosodium Glutamate
Document Summary
Synesthesia - is when numbers are associated with colors. Feelings like moving to the rhythm, dancing, singing at a concert are dependent on receptors which send information to the somatosensory cortex in the parietal lobes of the brain. Sensitive areas of the body (fingers) can detect two points even when they are placed closely together. Less sensitive area (back) can only detect one point when there are actually two which are spaced apart. Haptics - is the active, exploratory aspect of touch sensation and perception. Active touch involves feedback: e. g. you can move your fingers over the surface of an object to identify whether any faults may be present. Haptics allows us to not only identify objects, but also to avoid damaging or dropping them. Kinesthesis - is the sense of bodily motion and position. Receptors for kinesthesis reside in the muscles, joints, and tendons. Kinesthesis allows one to hold an object with enough resistance to avoid dropping it.
