PSYB04H3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 8: Statistical Inference, Statistical Significance, Concurrent Validity
Document Summary
Bivariate correlational research: an association claim describes a relationship between 2 variables. Less ambitious language is used to indicate association. It is far more common for researchers to plot the results of an association with a categorical variable as a bar graph: a scatterplot represents a mean and not each person. Interrogating association claims: with an association claim, the two most important validities to interrogate are construct validity and statistical validity, you might also ask about the external validity of the association. Although internal validity is not usually relevant to an association claim, you need to know why it is not relevant. Construct validity: how well was each variable measured: e(cid:454)a(cid:373)ple: to i(cid:374)te(cid:396)(cid:396)ogate the mehl stud(cid:455), (cid:455)ou (cid:449)ould ask (cid:395)uestio(cid:374)s a(cid:271)out the (cid:396)esea(cid:396)(cid:272)he(cid:396)s" operationalization"s of the way they measured deep talk and well-being. Statistical validity question 1: what is the effect size: the effect size describes the strength of an association, example: figure 8. 5 (pg.
